My experience in teaching a foreign language – does it work for children?
Learnig foreign languages is something people have been doing for ages. It’s just part of our life. Good communication is something necessary if you want to travel and visit new places.
Sometimes however you just need to use foreign langueges, even if you wouldn’t plan it. And you’re nearly forced to do it. After the war in Ukraine had started, many Ukrainian families came to Poland. There were terryfied. After a couple of weeks children had to go to school, where everybody spoke language they didn’t understand. I have helped them to find themselves in a new reality. A lot of children came to my house to study. They were 5 to 18 years old. There were also many adults taught by me. We have worked really hard. Thankd to it their new life in Poland became easier.
One of my best students was a boy, 7 years old. He learned so fast! His older sister, 13 years old, had some problems with writing, so he could help her when necessary.
My little son, who is 2 right now, has an Ukrainian nanny. And he has already been using a few Ukrainian words! He also understands quite a lot from the spoken language because she uses her native language almost all the time.
My point is, that we shouldn’t be affraid of letting our children learning foreign languages. When they’re little, they learn very quickly and efficiently. I can see this in my everyday life.
